Rich asked me to post this topic and I do find it pretty interesting.
He traded for Jeff Niemman before the season and also got a prospect tag attached (from TB) because Jeff Niemman was PP-2013. After the trade, Jeff Niemman was injured and will will miss he entire season. By rule if a player is under PP status and doesn't get an AB/INN in a season he doesn't loose that year of PP. In this case Jeff Niemman will be PP-2014. Rich's question is he PP-2014 or 2014: $3Mil 2015: $5Mil, if he is PP-2014 what happens to the tag that he traded for?
The way I see it we have three options:
1.) Jeff Niemman PP-2014
2.) Jeff Niemman 2014: $3Mil 2015: $5Mil
3.) Jeff Niemman PP-2014 + Prospect tag 2015: $3Mil 2016: $5Mil
I am undecided as to what what we should do. Is it fair to give Jeff Niemman the extra year of PP plus the 2015 Prospect tag. If we go that route, TB should not be penalized in my opinion, so we would be giving Rich a free tag. Do we return the tag to TB and give Rich a compensation pick for trading for and loosing the tag if we give him him the extra year of PP?
