im not exactly sure how these work.
if my team has 3 franchise tags and 2 restricted tags, does this mean i can tag up to 3/2 players per year? or does the tags last for the duration of their "real-life" contract?
and how does trading tagged players work? it seems to me that tags are actually worth something in this league. imo, i think 3/2 tags per year is more than enough for any team, since i dont think a team can have that many expiring contracts at the end of each year; therefore it can't be for each year.

it is for each year, and you would be surprised how many expiring contracts there are for each team (I had 9 this season). You tag 3 players with franchise tags, which means they will receive whatever their reallife contract is, or a player thats in arbitration would receive that value. Restricted tags you place on a player, but everyone else gets to bid on them. So at the end of the bidding you have the option of matchings the highest AAS, or you could let the winning team win the player and receive picks as compensation.
tags can be traded only with a player and not by themselves. and once a tag is traded to a player, it can't be removed and will remain attached until after the offseason when he is assigned a new contract

You also have the option of using one of your franchise tags as a prospect tag. Once year you can tag an expiring PP only contract with a prospect tag. That players contract will be $3Mil the first season and $5Mil the second year.
Example on your team Alberto Callaspo's contract expires at years end. You can franchise tag him, place a restricted tag on him, or turn a franchise tag in to a prospect tag and pay him 2012: $3Mil and 2013: $5Mil.

#1 as far as the tag, you wouldnt lose that tag for 5 years. the next year you get 3 franchise tags and 2 restricted. and the next you get the same. you get the same amount of tags each offseason to use. so you can tag players A,B and C this year with a franchise tag (and for sake of arguement you signed them all to 3 year deals)... the following season you can still tag players D,E and F with franchise tags, because you get new tags every offseason
now with that said, tags do not roll over year to year. so you cant tag only A and B this year and C,D,E and F next. they are only good for one offseason:
#2 picks. The picks received from RFA are the next offseason's picks. We are in the 2011 offseason currently, in which only picks for the 2011 offseason were able to be trade last year. So when RFA comes around, we use the following year's picks (2012) to be the compensation (because everyone has them and only their own). So now 2012 offseason picks can be traded, but 2013 can't (which will be what our next RFA will use as compensation next offseason). So you should not be allowed to trade any pick that will be used as compensation because your not allowed. So there will never rise to the issue that a pick that should be used for compensation was traded.
