Each franchise will have the capability of retaining the rights of a “55-man” roster. This roster can include any MLB players or players signed by any MLB affiliate team (minor leagues) the GM desires. For the purposes of the inaugural fantasy season for Full Count Baseball, each franchise will start with 28 players (8 keepers and a full 20 man minor league roster). The rest of the 50-man roster will be added via draft, free agency and trade.
We will define the types of players here:
a) Minor Leaguer- A player who has yet to record 150 career AB or 50 career IP at the major league level
b) Prospect- A player that qualifies under the 4 year prospect rule
c) Major Leaguer- A player that has eclipsed the 4 year prospect rule
d) International Free Agents (IFAs) Under 23 when signed
e) International Free Agents (IFAs) 23 and over when signed
All 55 players will be on your specific roster on FANTRAX.
Prospect Protection- A player's prospect protection begins the season AFTER he reaches either 150 ML AB or 50 ML IP. Once a player becomes a prospect as defined by this rule, he must be moved to the club's Major League Roster. This does not apply during the season a player reaches these marks, but the season after. For example Troy Patton of the Baltimore Orioles has career Big League IP of 12.2 he will stay as a minor league player until he reaches the 50 IP markAny player with less than the cut off of 150 Career AB or 50 Career IP may be kept as one of your 25 franchise Minor League Keepers, more than that and they must be kept as one of the 8 Major League Keepers. The season that the player in question passes the Career AB and Career IP, the player will continue to be a minor league player until the next season where he will use his 1st of 4 years of Prospect Protection.
This also applies to the 4 years of Prospect Protection, once those Career AB or IP have been reached, the following season will be that player's first year of prospect protection. This cut off is done to ensure that September Call Ups will still be protected fully for the next season when they actually start contributing to the Major League team on a full time basis. During this time, players will count 400K/yr, unless they have signed a more lucrative deal. After 4 years in the league (after eclipsing 150 AB or 50 IP), that player will then become a free agent, subject to normal free agent rules, Franchise or Restricted Options and so on.
***This does NOT apply to foreign players who sign huge contracts without previously recording a single ML AB or IP. These players will be counted against the cap at their real life contracts. The same goes for Minor Leaguers without game experience. If they happened to sign a lucrative deal (in excess of 400K/yr) they too will be costed at whatever the terms of their real life contract as stated by Cotts.
